The Odyssey Arena is a multi-purpose arena built as part of the Odyssey complex that was Belfast’s millennium project. Other capital cities across the UK had their own projects, Cardiff produced the Millennium stadium and London the Dome. While London’s project involved so much more money than Belfast’s it never really lived up to the hype and lost a huge amount of money and closed a few years later. The Odyssey of course is still open and thriving as well as ever today.
As part of the complex and as well as the arena the people of Belfast got a huge entertainment area. There where bars, restaurants, cafes, bowling and game centres, a Warner cinema, and IMAX theatre and a W5 science park. It provided people with a place to spend an entire day and it was for people of all ages to have fun in, day and night.
The Odyssey arena was opened for hockey business in December 2000 when the Giants played the Ayr Scottish Eagles in the first ever game at the arena. Although the Giants lost the game, it was a sell-out crowd and it remained that way for the rest of the first season.
Although the arena sees a number of concerts, shows and other sporting events throughout the year it is the Giants who are the most frequent resident of the building and there is little doubt they have made the Odyssey arena their home.
