For me personally this was the first Giants season I wasn’t regularly in the stands cheering the boys on. Just a week before the new season got underway I moved to live in Canada and so relinquished my season ticket, but not my support from afar. I watched a handful of games by webcast when the time difference would allow but always kept up with results and kept the site as up-to-date as I could while phoning home and finding out what everyone thought of each player. It was an up and down season over all for the team under the leadership of rookie coach Steve Thornton who was cutting his teeth in his first ever coaching job. He lead the Giants to a 4th place finish which might be looked upon as disappointing if it wasn’t for the awful run of injuries the team had to contend with almost from start to finish of the season. It was un-relenting and it threw off their title challenge. But they didn’t come away with nothing to show for their efforts picking up the long elusive Challenge Cup in which they had never won before in their history. They finished the regular season by adding to the Challenge Cup with success in the Knockout Cup. The playoffs are barely worth a mention as the Giants team came up short yet again and failed to make the final-four weekend in Nottingham along with myself … I was missing it for the first time in 7 years. Still, the fans were treated to some good players this season; from the goal scoring ability at both even strength and short-handed by Paul Deniset to the unbelievable haul of power play goals by the likes of Evan Cheverie and Bobby Robbins. Going forward the fans will hope Thornton, with lots of experience behind him of so many different circumstances can build on it and bring more success to the team.
