The memory of Theo Fleury was just that, a memory, as the Giants looked to build on the success of the previous season by challenging for more silverware. They always say winning a cup is hard but repeating is tougher still and the Giants found that out this season. The Giants replaced Fleury as their topline centre with the speedy Mark Dutiaume while Jason Ruff returned after leaving midway through the previous season. Also coming in was Jeff Hutchins to add some grit to the wing. Those changes alone gave the fans hope and by the seasons end those three player would finish first, second and third in team scoring but the trophies didn’t follow. Injuries coupled with below par goaltending and a poor run in form in February forced now bench-coach Ed Courtenay onto the ice but it was to-little-to-late. It was Coventry who ended up on top after a long fight with the Giants and in the playoffs the team fell short at the semi-final stage yet again in a loss to Nottingham.
