The financial problems of the summer may have been behind the Giants in terms of icing for the season but it had affected the playing side of things. Many players had moved on because of the problems including coach Dave Whistle. It was the birth of the new Elite League with tighter salaries and the use of British players it was a new era in Giants hockey. Taking over behind the bench was player Rob Stewart and although hopes were high things just didn’t go the way everyone hoped and the Giants struggled to one of their worst seasons in team history. The few bright spots included the return of Jason Ruff and his outstanding play which at times carried the team, and the young British players who got enough ice time and experience that would benefit them and the Giants in years to come. The seasons end marked the departure of Giants greats Colin Ward and Paxton Schulte who had become more and more disillusioned with the league as the Giants struggled. Unfortunately the poor season also resulted in the sacking of player-coach Rob Stewart, a fan favourite who took on the job at probably the worst possible time in team history and in his own way helped secure the future of the team.
