Upon retiring from hockey at the end of the 2009/10 season nobody had played more times for the Belfast Giants and nobody had been decorated more than Shane Johnson himself. A double league and playoff winner for the Giants, Shane Johnson is one of the most popular players ever to play for the team and has been central to the greatest memories the club had in their first ten seasons. One of the most consistent players the club have ever had, Johnson could always be counted upon night in, night out.

After graduating from Boston University and playing a year with the Canadian National team, Shane came to the UK to play his hockey. After seasons in London and Bracknell he joined the Giants where he made his home picking up MVP in his first season. Playing in nine seasons for the Giants, he’s seen and done it all.  Probably his greatest Giants moment game in the 2003 playoff final when he scored twice – his only two goals of that years playoffs – to help lead the Giants to their first playoff championship. In the 2004-2005 season under Tony Hand, Shane was named captain of the team for one year. Never a flashy player but always reliable and a real pain to play against will be how he will best be remembered. At the end of the 2006 season it seemed like we had seen the last of Shane when he signed in the EPL for Slough Jets before being picked up by the Sheffield Steelers. He started the following season in Sheffield before moving across to the Cardiff Devils, but when a position came up at the Giants due to injuries that season Shane jumped at the chance to return and stayed on for 3 seasons before announcing his retirement from hockey. He leaves the Giants having played more games for the club than anyone else in team history with 489 in all.
