George Awada arrived at the Giants as a signing of Tony Hand’s and by his second season he was named captain. The kind of player that could take on any roll on a team, he had the ability to score goals, set them up, check hard, play on the penalty kill, the power play and even occasionally drop the gloves. One look at the trophies he won as a Giant says a lot about the kind of winner George is and his best moment with the club must surely have been when he lifted the league title as captain in the 2005/06 season. While injuries began to get the better of him in his final few years there was nobody who would push themselves further and harder for the cause. Often playing while injured, Awada set the standard for what it meant to be a Giant in his time with the club and for me will be one of the few players to have played for the club that truly summed up what kind of player the people who pay to watch the games love to see play.
