Coach Ed Courtenay leaves the Giants not only as one of our most successful coaches but also as one of our greatest players. A born playmakers Ed Courtenay had vision on the ice that most other players can only dream of. His 129 assists in his complete 124 games played is a testimony to that. Ed made all the players he played with on his line better. You only have to look back over the three years Ed played here at the goal scoring achievments of line-mates like Curtis Huppe, Jeff Hutchins, George Awada, Peter Campbell, Scott Cameron, for a short time Ryan Smith and even Theoren Fleury. When a slumping player was put on Ed’s line he started to produce and at times vise-versa — when taken away from Ed some players lost their scoring touch. But goals, assists and all that stuff aside, Ed Courtenay was also the coach of the Giants. He lead the team to one league title, one second place finish and two appearances at the playoff final four in three tries. It’s that failure to win the playoffs that will probably dissapoint him most when remembering his stay in Belfast but in the fans eyes there is no doubt the Giants played pure entertaining offensive hockey. From the infamous stick-throwing incident to his partnership with Theo Fleury, Ed Courtenay leaves behind some great memories from his time in the Odyssey.
After leaving the Giants Ed retired to become a hockey players agent based in South Carolina.
