Giants leave it late to win again

November 16th, 2008 by Ricky

The Giants completed a successful weekend on the road with another win, this time against Manchester Phoenix as the Giants came from behind late in the game to take the two points. Paul Deniset was the hero of the night scoring a hat trick that included the game tying goal with less than ten minutes left and then the game winning goal with 23 seconds remaining. The game looked to be heading to overtime when he scored his winner crushing the Phoenix side and giving the Giants all the points. MORE »

Giants unvail their captin and it’s big George

September 26th, 2008 by Ricky

The Giants officially announced George Awada as club captain today after coach Steve Thornton had tired a number of players out in the roll to see who fitted best. In the end it came down to a player vote and Awada won the decision by a long shot. It’ll be George’s 4th year as captain of the Belfast Giants and it was a roll I felt was only a matter of time before he got it. Awada has been an excellent leader over his time in Belfast and while at times his points production could be questioned his effort never could.

He is by for the longest serving captain in team history and should the Giants win silverware this season, especially the playoffs, he will be arguably one of the best. Until now only Paul Kruse has captained the Giants to playoff glory.

Bobby Robins, some peoples tip for the captaincy, was awarded an ‘A’ along with Paul Deniset and Mark Morrison. Mo will wear the other ‘A’ on home games with Deniset wearing it on the road. That should keep everyone happy.

Signings come in two-by-two

July 17th, 2008 by Ricky

Cheverie, a 28 year-old forward from Canada has previous Elite League experience with Coventry in 05-06 and joins the team from Morzine in France while Deniset, a 27-year old centre, also from Canada, will be new to the Elite League coming in from Schwennigen ERC in the German 2nd division.
