Into the final throws

The Belfast Giants are into the final throws of the 2010/11 Elite League seasons and it has reached desperation stages. Actually, it has reached that horrible stage were you now desperately require the opposition to drop points in order for you to win the championship. One look at the league table and there is reason to be optimistic that it could happen. Both Belfast and Sheffield have three games remaining and the Giants trail by just the one point, but flick up the fixture list and the pessimism quickly begins to set in.

Following up on the recent offensive output

The recent goal scoring form isn’t new for this seasons Belfast Giants it turns out when you take a look at the season-by-season statistics. Their 239 goals in all competitions so far this season is already a lot more than they have ever produced in any previous season. In fact the next best was in 2003-2004 when they scored 207, in a season regarded by many as one of the Giants worst.

The Giants have always been known as an offence first, run-and-gun team. It came with Dave Whistle, it was kept by Rob Stewart, expanded on by Tony Hand and Ed Courtenay — two very offensively gifted forwards — and now taken to a new level by another one in Steve Thornton.

A Hat Trick of Hat Tricks for Deniset

There was something interesting about Paul Deniset’s hat trick in tonights 8-1 victory over Manchester. Not only was it his third hat trick of the season but his third against the same team. Yep, Manchester have been the result of three heavy defeats to the Giants and on all three of them occassions Deniset found the net three times. One in a 6-3 win, another in a 4-2 victory and again in last nights 8-1 demolition.

Giants continue new year winning streak

2009 got underway in the usual right fashion for the Giants in a 3-1 win over the Manchester Phoenix. Goals came by the way of Ceverie, Awada and Thornton while Lyle, who picked up the man of the match, fell two-minutes shy of a shutout.

The win gave the Giant their 9th straight win in opening games of a new year. In 9 attempts the team have won all nine, eight of which have been played at home, with a total record of 44 goals for and just 13 against.
