You don’t need to have to think back far to remember the Giants season without Stevie Lyle. It was only about 42 games ago and the Giants season was in turmoil and changes needed to be made. Ed Courtenay went out and brought in Stevie Lyle to tighten up the goals and at the same time picked up Pete Campbell to add to the scoring. It turned the Giants fortunes 180 as the team started to win games and climb up the table.

On Monday night these two guys were rewarded for their help to the Giants cause at the annual awards dinner. Stevie Lyle picked up four of the six possible awards he could win while Pete Campbell picked up the best forward award. Lyle won the Player’s player, Coaches Player, Best British Player and overall MVP awards. It’s the most awards won by a player at an awards dinner.

Other awards went to Shane Johnson, who picked up two awards, as the Kids MVP (otherwise known as the Paxton Schulte award) and best defenseman, while Mark Dutiaume won the Players unsung hero award. Leigh Jamieson won the other award of the night – the goal of the year award for his goal against Coventry in February, as voted for by the fans.

Below is a list of the evening winners:

Player’s Player – Stevie Lyle
Kid’s MVP – Shane Johnson
Goal of the Year – Leigh Jamieson
Player’s Unsung Hero – Mark Dutiaume
Coach’s Player – Stevie Lyle
Best British Player – Stevie Lyle
Best Defenseman – Shane Johnson
Best Forward – Peter Campbell
Team MVP – Stevie Lyle

Martin Klempa swept the board at the Awards night on Monday, picking up two of the three major awards on the evening.

He started out by winning the award that is held in the highest regard by players – the player’s player of the year. Always a major honour to be voted the MVP by your fellow players Martin was an easy winner of the award.

He was back up to collect his second award of the evening only a few minutes later when he collected the fans MVP of the season, but he did not give a speech as his English is still very basic, but what he did on the ice said it all as they replayed some of the best moments of his season on the big screen.

Tony Hand also took the stage to present the coaches player of the year award and he said it was an extremely hard award to decide on but his final choice went to one of the men who lead on the ice as well as off it throughout the year and that man was 32 goal scorer, George Awada.

Mel Angelstad picked up the Children’s MVP of the year becoming the second man to win the trophy after 4 times winner Paxton Schulte who left the Giants last year. It was a real comedy night with Mel Angelstad, Dairmuid Kelly and Fredrik Nasval arriving fashionably late to cheers from the crowd as they where dressed in 70′s outfits with Nasval sporting a long black haird wig and the three of them decked out in 70′s styled large rimmed sun glasses.

Todd Kelman then took centre stage for the laughs when he came out to present the awards dressed in a Kilt with Scottish bagpipes playing, wearing a Tony Hand Giants jersey and yelling at the top of his voice in a heavy Scottish accent. He joked and mocked the Giants coach in good humour for 10 minutes before presenting the awards.

In the end there was the disco where the fans could interact with the players and dance the night away. A fantastic night was had by all.
