Giants score their 2000th goal in team history
History | Sunday 15 November 2009 by Richard BlayneyThe Giants won 8-0 tonight in Newcastle but the big moment was the eight and final goal scored by Jeff Szwez at 54:10 as it marked the 2000th goal in Belfast Giants history. Considering it took until the end of the fifth season (11 March 2005) to score 1000 this one came about half-a-season ahead of schedule. Here is what I wrote about the 1000th goal almost five years ago (time flies!)
It was a 6-6 tie on the night against Coventry Blaze in the Odyssey but the third goal of the game, scored by George Awada at 32:27 and assisted by Tony Hand and Curtis Huppe marked the 1000th goal in Belfast Giants team history. The milestone moment came just two games before the end of the regular season and so took almost five full seasons to complete. By that reckoning the Giants fans can expect to see the 2000th goal sometime towards the end of the 2009/10 season, all being well.
It took 290 games to score the first 1000 goals and 275 games to grab the next 1000. Like before I’ll predict against that the Giants will show a similar kind of consistency and take about 275-300 more games to get another 1000 meaning at the beginning of the 2014/15 season or the tail end of the 2013/14 season. Here is hoping we’re all there to see it.
