Review of Mels Round 1

Fighting | Tuesday 15 March 2005 by

As it says… This one is dedicated to those who love their old time, rock ‘em sock ‘em old time hockey and Mel provides just that. From start to finish this DVD is loaded with some fantastic fights put together by the work of Mel’s fists and his brother Elwood’s computer skills.

It includes some great knockout punches including one in which Mel puts his opponent down for a good 3 minutes in one punch. Also in there is the classic bouts against Darcy Hordichuck that some fans regard as the best ever – Two men standing toe to toe and throwin’ ‘em. Read More»

28 Games lost to Injury

Playoffs 2005 | Sunday 13 March 2005 by

It’s been one of them better years for the Giants organisation in terms of injuries throughout the season although veteran Giant Todd Kelman may disagree as he sat out two long periods of time with injuries in the first half of the season missing 12 games of the teams total 23 games lost to injury this year.

In all the Giants had a full squid for 27 of the 50 games played this year, comfortably over 50% in all and this has been a rarity for the Giants in previous seasons, especially last year when it seemed a star player was falling to injury just as the other came back.

Giants score 1000th goal in team history

History | Friday 11 March 2005 by

It was a 6-6 tie on the night against Coventry Blaze in the Odyssey but the third goal of the game, scored by George Awada at 32:27 and assisted by Tony Hand and Curtis Huppe marked the 1000th goal in Belfast Giants team history. The milestone moment came just two games before the end of the regular season and so took almost five full seasons to complete. By that reckoning the Giants fans can expect to see the 2000th goal sometime towards the end of the 2009/10 season, all being well.

Giants Win but Blaze take the Title

Elite League 2004/05 | Sunday 6 March 2005 by

Coventry done what they had to do and beat the London Racers tonight to take the Elite League championship and leave the Giants superb 6-3 win over last seasons Champions Sheffield a fore gone conclusion.

The Giants done everything they could and had to hope London took the win but it wasn’t to be as the Blaze ran out comfortable 5-1 winners.

A goal and assist from on form Mel Angelstad and a penalty shot goal from Awada where just a few of the highlight moments of a 6 goal victory for the Giants as they found themselves disappointed in victory when the news of the Coventry win sank in.

The Giants had to battle for their win however and Sheffield kept the pressure on, taking an early lead and then tying the game at 2-2 before the Giants raced ahead for the win in the third period. Giants goals came from Kelman and Hand on the Power play and then from Levers, Nasval, Awada with a penalty shot and then Mel Angelstad.

Although the league is now gone for the Giants their will be much pride to be taken from next weekends double header with the new Champions along with a rhythm to be built going into the playoffs and also to send a message to the Blaze that the Giants will be no push over come playoff time in only a few weeks.

Johnson out with leg Injury

Players | Thursday 3 March 2005 by

After a mid ice collision by ex-Giant Dave Matsos, Giants captain Shane Johnson limped off injured and didn’t return to Thursday nights win against Cardiff. Early reports look like it is damage to the knee but the team have not confirmed anything.

Going into Friday nights game against Cardiff again Giants general manager John Elliot said that Shane would sit out the game and be re-evaluated in the morning.

How many games Shane will miss at this very curtail time of the season is still to be known…
