Mo-Train saves the day and gives 2 points to the Giants

January 4th, 2009 by Ricky

Into the last 10-minutes of the game the Giants were tied 1-1 with the Devils having come from behind through a Bobby Robins goal midway through the game. It looked like the game would be going to overtime and the Devils would be walking away with a point of their own. On the balance of things a point on the road wouldn’t have been a bad thing but with the Steelers holding a pretty lead over the Giants in the standings they boys really could have done with the regulation win. With 53:47 on the clock they got the win thanks to unsung hero, Mark Morrison.

Giants continue new year winning streak

January 4th, 2009 by Ricky

2009 got underway in the usual right fashion for the Giants in a 3-1 win over the Manchester Phoenix. Goals came by the way of Ceverie, Awada and Thornton while Lyle, who picked up the man of the match, fell two-minutes shy of a shutout.

The win gave the Giant their 9th straight win in opening games of a new year. In 9 attempts the team have won all nine, eight of which have been played at home, with a total record of 44 goals for and just 13 against.

Giants end the year on a losing note

December 30th, 2008 by Ricky

Shame. My second and last game of the 08-09 British Hockey season ended in defeat for the Giants. In the two games I seen over the period I have been back in Northern Ireland the team picked up two points from a game that wasn’t a classic and lost the game that was actually fun to watch. But the scores aside it was nice being back in the Odyssey, nice to see old faces, a good attendance and a nice shiny new and very effective pre-game show. MORE »

MacMillan picks up the Gordie Howe

December 28th, 2008 by Ricky

The Gordie Howe hat trick is when a player get a goal, an assist and a fight. It is named after a great player of yester-year who actually only achieved the statistic he is named after once in his glittering career. Still, Malcolm MacMillan done it tonight and probably not for the last time this season at the rate he has been dropping the mits and scoring the points. Tonight I seen Malcolm and his team mates in action for the first time this season and while it wasn’t the most polished performance I have ever seen there were a few standout performances and at the very least I got to see a win. Giants blow lead to drop point

December 23rd, 2008 by Ricky

The Giants came home from the annual Edinburgh double header with three points out of a potential four. Now, normally you might say that wasn’t a bad effort for two road games but when you have a 4-1 lead by the halfway point of the game it can only be seen as very disappointing. It keeps the Giants down in 4th place as they continue to lose ground on the teams at the top. It is far from time to panic but with a busy Christmas schedule coming up the Giants will really need to start winning more than they have been losing of late to really stay in touch. MORE »

Advantage Giants in the double header

December 20th, 2008 by Ricky

The Giants got the weekend off to the perfect start with a comfortable 4-1 victory over the Capitals. Ok. I say comfortable only because I assume it was such, I didn’t actually see the game. Not to worry though it is the two points that count and it’ll send the Giants masses into the Edinburgh night to whatever pub they happen to commune in content with what they seen on the ice and looking forward to tomorrow’s match.

Looks can be deceiving as Giants thump Stingrays

December 19th, 2008 by Ricky

The Giants have found Hull quite a hard team to overcome this season so it was to my pleasant surprise that I turned up the score when I got home from work this evening to see a score line of 8-2 in the Giants favor. The had just snapped their losing streak in time for my pending trip back to Northern Ireland for 10 days were I will take in two games that I really hope they can show me what everyone was raving about in the first few months of the season. Then I switched up the forums to hear the fans reviews and heard that all 8 of the Giants goals came against the back-up goalie of Hull. MORE »

Character Building Win for the Giants

December 13th, 2008 by Ricky

Now that was one to get the fans off their seats. The Giants have been well known over the years for their third period come backs and last night they did it again. Putting the fans into a panic before lifting them up with a come from behind victory. The win was against title rivals Nottingham which also helped their cause it moved the team up a place above the Panthers into 3rd. MORE »

You can officially call it a slump now

December 7th, 2008 by Ricky

After losing for the second time in a row for the first time this season the Giants went on the road to Sheffield looking to get back on the winning trail against one of their major rivals for the title this season. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and the team fell to its worst defeat of the season being shut out 5-0 to the Steelers. Yes, you can now call it a slump. MORE »

Two defeats in a row for the first time this year

December 6th, 2008 by Ricky

The Giants lost their second game in a row for the first time this season but failed to slip further down the table thanks to the fact they had games in hand and were involved in the only game of the night yesterday evening. Manchester were in town and took the spoils keeping them in fifth place in the standings and still very much close enough to be a threat. MORE »

Hull ruin what looked like a huge weekend

December 2nd, 2008 by Ricky

Just when it looked like we might actually walk away with four point this weekend, much to everybody’s suprise considering the injuries this team has, hockey showed us why nothing should be taken for-granted and certainly no team taken as a guaranteed two points. After being embarrassed by Hull on home ice just a few weeks ago the Giants fell yet again to the bottom of the league team on the back of the win of the season over league challengers Coventry Blaze just a few nights before. Giants sitting pretty after big win over Coventry

November 29th, 2008 by Ricky

The Giants were playing without three of their top players in Robins, Martin and Denesit but even with the short bench they were able to overcome one of the league favourites this season Coventry by beating up on them 3-1 in the Odyssey. The win keeps the Giants in third place but only a point back on leaders Sheffield with games in hand. Not many people gave the Giants a chance tonight, even myself. When I heard about the injuries I said a point would be a good outcome, but the players believed and that was what mattered in the end.

Giants continue their winning ways

November 22nd, 2008 by Ricky

Another game another two points for the Giants. After winning two on the road last weekend and now two at home this weekend the Giants have certainly put their bad showing against Hull two weeks ago behind them. Tired legs might have been expected tonight as the Giants went into the clash without key players, Mark Morrison, Bobby Robins and Paul Deniset, but for the Giants it didn’t prove to be a problem against one of the league strugglers, Edinburgh Capitals who fell to the Giants 5-2. Giants edge Steelers in Shootout

November 21st, 2008 by Ricky

There hasn’t been a shootout in the Odyssey for a while but the controversial skills competition was used tonight to settle the game between the Giants and the Steelers for who would take home the two points. Thankfully for the hometown fans the victor was the Giants. They had to work hard for their spoils however as they twice came from behind to force overtime and then the shootout. In the shootout the Giants scored twice (Martin and Cheverie), the Steelers scored once (Talbot) and missed twice to hand the win to Belfast. MORE »

Giants leave it late to win again

November 16th, 2008 by Ricky

The Giants completed a successful weekend on the road with another win, this time against Manchester Phoenix as the Giants came from behind late in the game to take the two points. Paul Deniset was the hero of the night scoring a hat trick that included the game tying goal with less than ten minutes left and then the game winning goal with 23 seconds remaining. The game looked to be heading to overtime when he scored his winner crushing the Phoenix side and giving the Giants all the points. MORE »
