It could be a long year…

…for any hockey fans living in Belfast. A comeback effort against Coventry that fell short on Friday night was followed by a shutout defeat to Newcastle on the road last night. It hasn’t been the best of starts for the Giants team, a team which by all accounts, that come directly from the fans at the games since I do not get to games myself anymore, the Giants have been very poor. Some fans even said the team look well behind the standard of last years team which only managed a 4th place finish in the league.

I’ve often preached the ‘give it more time’ theory and that teams need time to settle, gel and get rolling as they should, but even this year from afar things look a little shaky. Maybe it’s the terrible powerplay record, the lack of goals from a normally goal happy team or that we were shutout so easily last night, but for all that its worth, I will stick by my theory and give it to ten games before really pressing down on the panic button of which my hand is only just starting to reach for.

Thornton had a good year last year as coach and an improvement was expected on the two trophies and 4th place finish so immediately people are starting to question some of the signings after results have went a little south, but we’ve had worse runs in the past and bounced back and perhaps it’s better they struggle a little out of the game than in the final run-in later in the year.

Someone said that the Steelers fans were calling for Matsos’ head this time last year after they got off to an equally bad start and look what happened to them: He took them to the league and playoff double. So some perspective is required.
