Bans for Brawlers

EIHL | Friday 18 September 2009 by

You’ve all seen the videos by now or at least if you haven’t seen the video you have surely heard of the incident. If you haven’t seen the video it’s worth a quick look but the camera angle is terrible and you don’t see the violence that brought the game into such disrepute that the infamous ‘Travesty of the Game’ penalty was handed out to two players. Brad Voth and Adam Knight went at it behind the players benches on their way to the dressing rooms after being ejected from the game for an on ice brawl moments earlier. Everyone tried to wade in by climbing the plexiglass behind the benches as punches were traded and even a stick thrown in spear like fashion from ex-Giant Curtis Huppe. It dragged the game into the gutter and the EIHL have handed out bans like they were going out of style.

The following is the statement from the EIHL:

The EIHL confirm that they have investigated incidents that took place at the game between the Cardiff Devils and Hull Stingrays on Sunday 13th September 2009. Following the review the suspensions issued by the league have been awarded as follows.

Cardiff Devils:

Brad Voth; 1 game automatic suspension for a fighting match penalty plus automatic 1 game suspension for a match penalty for Travesty of the Game. Additional 3 game suspension awarded for not going straight to the dressing room as per EIHL rules. Total suspension 5 games. In addition the player has a further 6 game suspension suspended for the remainder of the season. If a match penalty is awarded against the player for Travesty of the Game in the 2009-10 season these 6 games will be added to any other penalties that may be given.

Scott Romfo; 1 game suspension for a 5+Game Misconduct for fighting in the last 2 minutes of a game

Mike Hartwick; 1 game suspension for a 5+Game Misconduct for fighting in the last 2 minutes of a game

Max Birbraer; 1 game suspension. After a review of the match night DVD a penalty has been awarded against the player . A 5+game misconduct for roughing and throwing punches over the plexi glass with results in an automatic game suspension.

Hull Stingrays:

Adam Knight; 1 game automatic suspension for a fighting match penalty plus automatic 1 game suspension for a match penalty for Travesty of the Game.

Curtis Huppe; 1 game suspension for throwing an object as per league rules. Additional 4 game suspension as this action is deemed reckless. Total suspension 5 games.

All suspensions take immediate effect.

The league would like to thank both clubs for their co-operation in this investigation and review.

Fair enough I say. Who doesn’t like a good toe-to-toe fight on the ice and who doesn’t even like the odd brawl on the ice and while it was certainly amusing watching the video and while nobody would have refused to watch it out of disgust, fighting off the ice is a big no-no and punishments needed to be handed down. Huppe throwing the stick spear like was something I haven’t seen before and am surprised he only got the punishment he did.

Old time hockey indeed.
