How is it still Possible?
Playoffs 2005 | Wednesday 30 March 2005 by Richard BlayneyThis is the question most Giants fans are asking going into tonight’s contest with the Cardiff Devils with only 3 games left to play in the playoffs and such a big points difference to the top 2 teams… We take a look at just what the Giants MUST do to keep their Nottingham hopes alive.
Remaining fixtures to be played:
Mar 30 – Cardiff Vs Belfast
Mar 31 - Belfast Vs Sheffield
Mar 02 - Belfast Vs Cardiff
Apr 03 – Cardiff Vs Sheffield
Current Standings:
GP W L D PTS Sheffield 6 2 1 3 7 Cardiff 5 2 0 3 7 Belfast 5 0 3 2 2 |
The Giants play in 3 of the final four games… Very few outside the EIHL top brass know how the standings finish in the result of a tie break so assuming the Giants are out of it come goal difference and their head to head match up’s with the other teams is not very good, its unlikely that if it came down to matching points the Giants would be going through. So with that the Giants must win the next three games, starting tonight in Cardiff.
It’s going to be tough having played at home to an excellent Steelers side on Tuesday night and with a game against Sheffield tomorrow night and then Cardiff on Saturday night, 4 games in 5 nights is never easy, especially when one is on the road in the middle and they are must wins.
So with the Giants winning all three games it would leave them on 8 points from 8 games played with Sheffield on 7 from 7 and Cardiff on 7 from 7 with them two teams playing each other in Cardiff on Sunday night.
Result being, a win for either of them teams would see them go through in first place with the Giants a point clear of third, in second place. If both the Devils and the Steelers tie this final game it would leave all teams on 8 points and well… Who knows where that would leave any of the teams?
