Screw you Leigh Jamieson
Game Blogs 2008/09 | Saturday 21 March 2009 by Richard BlayneyThe Giants have been mailing it in recently in the league, very much content to settle for forth place in the hope that they can take on and beat Cardiff in the playoffs. Tonight was different though in the penultimate league game of the season. This appeared to be an effort to step up their momentum going into the playoffs. The only problem was that a player they let go last summer, Leigh Jamieson, came back to bite them with an overtime victory. Defeats to Coventry always hurt but its even worse when Jamieson grabs the goal winner.
The goals came early and fast tonight. Four in the first seven minutes of the game as the Giants overturned an early 1-0 defecit to take a 3-1 lead through the first period thanks to goals from Thonton, Cheverie and Morrison.
The second period started as the first had begun with an early Coventry goal but this time the Giants couldn’t respond as Coventry scored three unanswered to take a 4-3 lead into the final frame. The final period seemed to suggest that both teams had run out of goals until the final minute Bobby Robins grabbed a late equaliser to send the game into overtime.
From there on in it was the Jamieson show as he got one over on his old team. That is all I’ll talk about it though.
So a forth place finish it is for the Giants. They cannot get any better and cannot fall further. Their final game of the season will be at home to the Manchester Phoenix and because it coincides with the Knockout cup game between the two teams you can be assured to see a concerted effort to win by the Giants. Finishing the season on a high going into the playoffs is a must.
