Giants asured of 4th place finish
Game Blogs 2008/09 | Thursday 19 March 2009 by Richard BlayneyFor the second season in a row the Giants fans will have to be content with a poor 4th place finish in the league table. Away from the league there has been lots to shout about this season thanks to the two cup competitions and while injuries have been a huge factor in the Giants not pushing for the league title, another forth place has to be seen as disappointing. Still a playoff run can more than make up for it. The forth place finish was confirmed after the team lost another league game, this time to Nottingham Panthers. Without the victory in the challenge cup on Tuesday night this has been a bad run of form going into the playoffs.
History has shown that it isn’t so easy to ease off once the league title has been decided and then turn it back on again for the playoffs but that is what the Giants will be looking to do when they take on Cardiff in the first round of the playoffs.
George Awada scored two goals in the game to go with Evan Cheverie’s opening goal of the game as the Giants blew a first period 3-1 lead. Three consecutive goals for Nottingham by Meyers, Bergin and Cooke spread across the final two periods brought the Panthers from behind and put them into second place behind league Champs, Sheffield.
