Shields back in Belfast on 2-year deal
April 14th, 2008As I reported last night from information found on snowploughed.blogspot.com, Colin Shields has indeed signed on with the Giants on a two-year contract. Shields who played with the Giants in 05-06 returns after a two-year absence. It is the first multi-year contract the Giants have signed a player too since Kevin Riehl back in the first two years of the teams existence.
Colin Shields is currently in Austria with the British National team at the World hockey Championships. Being a British player of import level quality it free’s up another import slot for the Giants new coach Stevie Thornton to fill with quality.
In his first year with Belfast, Shields was a hit with the team scoring 47 points in just 31 games on a line with legend Jason Ruff. Shields then left for a year in North America were he played the majority of his minor career, including getting drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers. After the 06-07 season in the U.S.A. Colin returned to the Elite League last season with the Newcastle Vipers. Giant’s fans may remember him most recently for helping his team eliminate the Giants from the Elite League playoffs just a few weeks ago.
If the Snow Plough blog is to be believed, and I usually take rumour sites with a pinch of salt, then Shields’ teammate from last season Todd Jackson will follow him to Belfast.
