Another season comes to an end
March 24th, 2008Regular season that is. Yep thats eight seasons down now and just a playoff run to go. In them eight seasons the Giants have two league wins, three second places, a sixth place and now two forth place finishes. The Giants wrapped up the last regular season with a win and in that hopefully the momentum they will need going into their playoff match up with Newcastle.
It has certainly been an up and down year for the Giants and not one I need to spend great time reminding everyone about. From a terrible start that seen them in last place after the first month and needing a number of player changes to a sixteen game winning streek that seen them climb right the way to first place to a stuttering finish to the year that seen them slide back to forth. With all them up and down’s nobody knows what to expect from the playoff run. Which Giants team will show up. That’s the question on ever Giants fans mind right now.
On the statistic side of things Ed Courtenay topped the scoring charts with 88 points (24+64). For a while Ed Courtenay was on a pace to hit 100 points but injuries late in the season slowed down his production. Pete Campbell, a early-mid-season pick-up from Basingstoke lead the team in goals with 36. It was actually 40 in all if you counted his scoring with Basingstoke. A very impressive feat in a 56 game season and his 36 for the Giants was the most by a player in a year ever for the Giants. Campbell also lead all Giants players in power play goals with 11. The Giants powerplay was the best in the league all season long. In penalty minutes the 176 by Carlyle Lewis lead the way. He also picked up 10 fighting majors to lead the team, second only to Skiehar’s 12 in 2005-2006 all-time.
As for league wide statistics, Coventry cleaned up on the scoring front. Two players on the team topping the 100 point plateau for the first time ever in Elite League history. Adam Calder was a class above everyone with 121 points including an unbelievable 56 goals and 23 powerplay helpers. He was backed up with the 107 points and 115 penalty minutes from Dan Carlson. Without a doubt these guys won the league for Coventry and I really hope the Giants will go out of their way to try convince one of them to join Belfast next year! In penalty minutes, as per usual, Andre Payette of Newcastle lead the way with 354.
This year has been the highest scoring year for the league ever in terms of player stats. There was the two players mentioned above hitting over 100 points, while three more players scored over 90 points.
With the playoffs being so short not to many players will improve to far on them stats but should the guys who have done the scoring continue to score the Coventry will be hard to stop and the Giants should make a good run. We’ll just have to wait and see.
