Courtenay set to smash a few records
December 31st, 2007Ed Courtenay in just over a month will turn 40 years of age. He’ll be the oldest player to ever have iced for the Giants but the player-coach will break a few more records if his current form continues.
Through 35 games so far (including four challenge cup games) big Ed has 18 goals and 46 assists for 64 points. Should that form continue Ed will play the full compliment of 58 regular season games. On current pace over the next 23 games you can expect to see Ed potentially score 12 goals and add 30 assists for another 42 points. So in all after 58 regular season games are done Ed Courtenay on current pace will have 30 goals and 76 assists for 106 points. Should Ed put in a 100+ point season he would become the first player in Elite League history and in Giants history to have a 100 point season and thats before the playoffs even begin.
Of course there are some factors that could work against the 39-year old . . . His age could slow him down in the final stretch of the season, he could always pick up an injury and becoming the first Elite League player to a 100+ point season could be hampered by Coventry’s Adam Calder who leads him in league points by three points so far. Still as of right now Ed is putting in one of the most impressive single seasons we have ever seen as Giants fans and we’ll all agree that it would be nice to see it continue.
His team mates will certainly look for it to continue. So far this season Ed has played along side a ton of different players and whoever it is, when they play with Ed they have their best scoring form of the season. At different times Ed has put himself with Ryan Smith, Scott Cameron, Leigh Jamieson, Peter Campbell, Carlyle Lewis, George Awada and Shaun Sutter and all have thrived in front of goal beside the best set-up man in the Elite League today.
Who on earth said that man should have remained as a bench coach at the start of the season?
