Lyle and Campbell in, Cameron injured, DeRouville released

October 17th, 2007

It’s quite the heading but the rumours were true. The Giants indeed did snap up Stevie Lyle and Campbell upon their leaving of the Basingstoke Bison. The good news of depth to the squad was hampered with the news that top goal scorer, Scott Cameron has a broken foot and will be out for a number of weeks.

Theres a saying that when your luck is out, it’s really out and that is the case with the bottom of the league Giants. Three major injuries to import players in three weeks will mean the Giants will continue to play short benched even with these three signings. Campbell and Lyle will add some much needed depth to the team.

With the addition of Lyle in goal it means Phil DeRouville has been released. DeRouville failed to impress in Belfast through the first thirteen games and the fans will be hoping Lyle can do the job. I think it’s the first time I can remember that the Giants have actually released a player in their eight year history. Lyle is a British born and trained goalie meaning the Giants will save on one import slot for a skating player when everyone does get healthy.

The Giants have yet to ice a full squad this season. Graeme Walton missed the opening two games and returned just as Gavalier left the ice injured. Roman has not been back since and further injures to Trevor Johnson and now Scott Cameron has increased the Giants problems.

With the signing of Shane Johnson just yesterday to replace the injured Johnson and Campbell now in to replace Cameron the Giants should be in a position of strength to face, ironically, the Bison themselves this Thursday night. The Giants will look to use this game and the new faces to kick start their failing season.

All eyes will be on all players because when Gavalier, Trevor Johnson and Cameron do return to the team at least two players will be released. With Shane Johnson able to play forward as well as defence it keeps Courtenay’s options open as to whome he might want to cut loose. They really are playing for their jobs now.
