Awada sparks Arena/Rink debate
October 14th, 2007George Awada’s latest article in the Sunday Life has raised a few eyebrows. The well written piece has George Awada talking about the future of the Giants and where their hockey might be played. Awada takes a shot at the Odyssey for putting the Giants, their longest standing tennants, away down the pecking order when it comes to booking slots at the arena.
“Even though the Giants have been the main tenants since it was built, now we seem last to get the crucial home dates we need. “
George was extremely impressed with the way things went down in Dundalk (baring the result) and the atmosphere the fans created. George didn’t suggest the Giants move south but with Dundonald ice-bowl causing all sorts of problems for the team as it is and the proof that an arena like Dundalk CAN work financially, the idea of a rink going in at the new national stadium certainly sounds like a nice idea. It might make the Odyssey care a little more if they knew the Giants had somewhere else to go.
I hear all this talk of building a multi-million pound sport facility out by the Maze.
I sure hope there are plans for an ice rink to be built - not only for the Giants but also for an alternative to the Ice Bowl.
Hockey is what the Osyssey gets week in week out from September to April. If the Giants moved on I wonder how they would get by without that regular guaranteed income from the Giants. I’d have thought it would be in their interests to work with their most regular tennant rather than give them what seems like some kind of second class status. Maybe they believe they could survive without them and if that is the case i certainly wouldn’t be against the Ginats playing out of a two to four thousand seater rink that was their own.
In the North of course!
