Injury bug bites as Kelman steps into the breach

September 13th, 2007

Just when we thought we had moved into a season that would not include an original Giants player we were wrong.  Giant for the past seven season Todd Kelman will be stepping into the breach once more dear friends as news broke that Roman Gavalier has picked up a knee injury that will keep him out of the side for at least three weeks.  Todd thought he had retired but he should have known better.  You never retire from Belfast!

You only have to look at some of the guy’s before him who have hung up the skates only to be pulled back into play a little bit more.  Rob Stewart in 03-04 when coaching had to come off the bench to play most of the season.  Ed Courtenay retired to bench coach last season but finished up the season on the ice when he replaced Huppe.  Then there was Rob Stewart again two seasons ago when we were short through injuries, he came back for more.  Let’s not even mention the number of times we thought we had seen the last of Jason Ruff only for him to return again.

No, it’s certainly not a bad thing that Killer is returning, he’s one of our greatest players ever but the bitter side of the sweet news is that we lose Roman.  Roman was the best defenceman on the team last season and has started this season like he means to follow up last year.  He may be in his mid 30’s but he’s still one of the best skating defensemen in the league.  Here’s hoping it’s not to serious and he wont be out for too long because as much as it’s nice to see Todd again, I’m not sure what Todd’s game shape is right now and well he was doing rightly as GM as it was.

Todd has said that should Roman’s injury turn long term that his return will still be short term and a more perminant replacement would be seaked.

Can anyone say Jason Bowen!!!
