Giants come crashing down to earth

September 10th, 2007

Devils 7, Giants 1

After a tidy start to their league season on Saturday night in Belfast the Giants travelled to Cardiff to take a beating from the Devils in the Challenge Cup.  Sure it’s ‘only’ the challenge cup and who really cares about that but a beating like that is never good in any competition at any time of the season.  The 7-1 defeat in which by all accounts the Giants played awful in will test the resolve of the team early on as they will look to bounce back from it next weekend when they get back to league action.  The only heart to be taken from this is that back in the 01-02 season the Giants opened that year with a 9-3 defeat to the London Knights only to bounce back and win the league by February so here’s hoping.

George Awada got the Giants only goal of the night but it was to little to late as Cardiff walked away with a well deserved win.  Reports from the game suggest they were good for every one of them seven goals.  It’s a wake up call to the Giants team who have yet to look convincing in any of their three games so far this year (two of which were friendlies).  Giants fans after looking at this defeat will be hoping that it’s not a sign of things to come and just a little blip that they can bounce back from.

One of the biggest sore points was that Brad Voth managed to pick up a hat-trick in the game, destroying the Giants early on.  He also picked up an assist on the way to a four point game. The Giants three stars were tough to pick, not only that I wansn’t actually there but because of the performance.  I went with the only three players that seemed to get some positive feedback from those at the game.

NOTES: Ed Courtenay’s assist on the lone Giants goal gave him his 100th point as a Giants player.  George Awada’s goal moved him past Giants legend Paxton Schulte and into the forth place slot in all-time points scored behind Curtis Bowen.
