Season Preview: Belfast Giants

August 24th, 2007

This summer may already feel like winter but it’s not quite hockey time yet.  However, with the season only a few weeks away and without knowing how much blogging time I will have I guess it’s about time to look into the season and preview each of the teams with as much knowledge as I actually have of them anyway!  Next up it’s the Giants:

THE VIEW

What to expect:
The Giants have signed a number of veteran players that have had fans debating all summer.  It’s made a change from the usual worries about lack of player signings however and with a roster now complete long before the season opener fans are left waiting impatiently to see what this group of Giants can do.  With no trophies last year anything but some silverware will be unacceptable to most Giants fans.  Still, the season looks promising and there’s little doubt a prolonged challenge for the league and playoffs is going to happen.

Key Player:
Philippe DeRouville: He played a handful of games at the tail end of last year when Minard’s year ended early and played very solid.  All eyes will be on him now though to replace Minard full-time in hockey’s most important position and help the Giants win a championship.

Odds for the Gambler:
5 to 1: To move to Dundalk by 08-09.
50,000 to 1: For Jason Ruff to return by Christmas
150,000 to 1: To re-sign Curtis Huppe by Christmas

If they where an NHL team they would be the:
Detroit Red Wings - Always competitive every year even with a very veteran group.

A Prediction that means nothing: 1st (Could I honestly pick anything else!)
