Angelstad Signs

August 12th, 2004

Giants fans have been delighted to hear the news of another signing to the team and the new signing goes by the name of Mel Angelstad.

Known for his legendary fighting skills, Angelstad is seen as one of the all time great minor league fighters in hockey history. He should add great depth to an already strong Giants team in the forward lines and will certainly look after the smaller players on the roster.

Coach Tony Hand has said that Mel will be the toughest enforcer ever to play in the UK. He didn’t start playing organised hockey until he was 16 and never played in the major junior leagues but progressed through the hockey ranks as word of mouth got out around North America of his toughness in the fight. He has had four seasons in his career where he has racked up over 400 Penalty minutes and many seasons with over 300 penalty minutes.

Most of his career he has had the roll of playing in the minor leagues protecting and guiding young skilled players through the ranks before they moved on to the NHL. Mel was never expected to hit the NHL ranks but his chance came while playing for the Washington Capitals minor league team the Portland Pirates when the Capitals called him up for two games.

This was only last season and this year he has chosen to leave North America for the first time in his playing career and explore hockey in Europe and Giants fans are delighted to hear it will be with the Belfast Giants.
