Sandrock off to the DEL

April 8th, 2003

Giants superstar season MVP Robby Sandrock who finished 3rd in the league in points scoring despite being a defencman has decided he wont be joining the Giants again next season as he has signed a one year deal with the Iserlohn Roosters of the DEL.

Its the same team that Giants’ ex-coach Dave Whistle signed up for last week. Robby is the first Giant to announce that he wont be back next year as he follows Dave to Germany.
Sandrock, who turned 25 just last month, has signed a one -year contract with the Roosters and will now attempt to push through his German passport application, the country where is father was born.

“I hope to have a good shot at things next season and I think it is going to be a lot of fun,” said Sandrock.

“I have been talking with this team for about a month and once Dave decided he was going to go there I wanted to get a deal worked out quickly.

“I am really looking forward to it already.”

The Roosters management were in Belfast to scout Sandrock before Whistle was even asked about the job, but now that he is off to Iserlohn the coach is happy to be taking Sandrock with him.

“Rob played excellently here all season, is still young and is getting better all the time,” said Whistle.

“He is a good guy in and out of the locker room and he is a player that I can sign easily without having to research him and I know he can make the step up.”

It remains to be seen if any more Giants players follow Whistle but the coach says that it isn’t likely at this stage.

“They said they wanted an offensive defencemen and even before there was any mention of me going there I recommended Rob to them and they came to look at him,” added Whistle.

“Right now they are going to concentrate on what guys they have already on the team who they want to keep.

“They had a pretty good year by their standards and I think a lot of the imports will want to stay so that is something that has to be sorted out before I make any signings.”

We all wish Robby the best for next season in the DEL and hopefully his career will go from strength to strength, and being under the wing of Dave Whistle again will do him no harm at all. I’ll be sure to have updates on Robby’s progress throughout next season.
