Catchin’ up on whats new
June 15th, 2007So it’s been a busy week or so in the Belfast Giants, at least for the typical June it has. We’re not used to player signings this early in the season yet they have been coming pretty fast so far. Theres even the shape of a good team already in place and you can see Ed Courtenay building his core. On top of some of the re-signings there have been some familuar faces moving on to pastures new while there has been a few new faces addded with the latest of them being tough guy Carlyle Lewis.
He joined up with the team from Italy last season where he has spent most of his career in the North American minor leagues scoring goals and beating up people. A tough guy who can score is how the Giants are advertising this guy and if thats the case then he’ll be a fan favourite from day one. Not since the departure of Paxton Schulte have the Giants had a guy who could put the puck in the net as well as drop the gloves with the best of them in the league.
Moving on from the Giants is Curtis Huppe. Arguably the most natural goal scorer to have played for the Giants he has left the team under a bit of a cloud as reported in the Belfast Telegraph this week. It’s sad to see Huppe go, he was a great team player for the Giants and was always good for goals finishing up his career second in all-time goals scored for the Giants team. He’ll be missed but you move on and no doubt the team can replace him though it will be a tough challenge for Ed.
Thats about everything I think, but no doubt once posted we’ll hear of another new signing. Nothing on the rumour grape vine unless your gulable enough to believe the postings on some forums that the great Mark Messier himself is on the way to Belfast!
