Ed to continue as player-coach

May 1st, 2007

Been a while, hasn’t it!  Don’t worry, the Giants haven’t disappeared, there’s finally some news to report.

It looks like Ed Courtenay will be back as Giants coach for a third term, continuing how he left off last season as a player as well as coach.  Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph today, Ed has said he believes he’s the best player-coach out there and is the right man for the job.  I love the confidence Ed.  Turning 40 this season Ed obviously believes he can still do a top job and still has the legs to last an Elite League season while coaching the team.  We’re sure hoping he’s right.

When he signed up as Giants coach back for the 05-06 season he was a player-coach but retired from the playing side of the game last summer to take up his role as bench coach.  With injuries and a lack of form hitting the roster late in the 06-07 regular season Ed un-retired himself to give the team a spark.  It seemed to work as the Giants got their form back and pushed Coventry all the way to the wire for the title.

On some nights Ed Courtenay who came back to play on a line with Jason Ruff and Jeff Hutchins would be superb, scoring multiple points and linking up so well with Jason Ruff bringing back memories of his time the previous season on a line with Theo Fleury where clearly both guys where thinking of a higher wavelength to those around them.  On other nights however, Ed would struggle with the pace and would go missing, but hopefully a good off season should address that.

Forty years of age or not, there’s few that have the vision and play making skills in this league as Ed Courtenay.
