Two-time MVP - Jason Ruff

April 5th, 2007

Jason Ruff has been breaking all sorts of records this season and he set another one on Tuesday night at the Giants end of season awards dinner by becoming the first player in team history to win the MVP award for a second time.   He previously picked up the honour in 2003-2004 and has won it again this time out after another excellent season by the big powerforward.  Only last weekend Ruff became the first man to score 100 goals as a Giants player adding to his acheivment of become the teams all-time leading points scorer earlier in the year.

Many tipped Roman Gavalier as the man to beat for the MVP award but there wont be many arguments agaisnt Ruff who has again been a force on the ice for the Giants.  He may be slowing down a little with age but there is no doubting his leadership he brings to the team as well has the plus a point per game average he continues to score at.  Should he decide to come back next year, nobody will complain.

In other awards… captain George Awada picked up the covated players player of the year award, an award often looked on by the players as the best one to win as it’s voted on by their fellow team-mates.  George maybe hasn’t scored at the rate he has in the past but theres no doubting his ability to step it up in clutch games and as the post season came along George brought out his A-game.  You know what you get with George and thats 110% every night without exception.  This award has been won in the past by such players as Kory Karlanders, Jason Ruff (twice), David Matsos, Martin Klempa and Mike Minard.

J.P.Morin in his first season with the Giants picked up the coaches player of the year award.  His team-mate George Awada is a two time winner of the award.  Morin has had a stellar season on the blueline with the Giants adapting quick to the large ice surface and zero-tolerance rules to log some huge minutes alongside line-mate Roman Gavalier.  Morin was a real offensive threat for the Giants with a great passing game and the ability to play the body well.  He’ll be welcomed back no doubt.

Mark Morrison completed a career year by winning the best British player while fellow local Graeme Walton picked up a special achievement award.  Jeff Hutchins was voted forward of the year as he finished up the regular season as the top goal scorer while Roman Gavalier who won two of the supporters club MVP awards picked up the defenseman of the year award.
