‘Atta Boy George - A Captains performance

March 17th, 2007

Giants 4, Panthers 3 (SO)

Theres an old saying often thrown around in sports, “Commeth the hour, commeth the man”.  Last night ‘the man’ showed up for the Giants when they need him the most - Their Captain.  Down two goals midway through the second period the Giants where looking for someone to step up and take control of the game and Captain George Awada did just that.  He dragged the Giants back into it with two second period goals to tie the game and a hat-trick goal late in the third to tie it up yet again and send it into OT and a shootout which the Giants duely won taking a vital two points.

Without the points the Giants where looking at an almost impossible task to retain their league title but George made sure they still had a fighting chance with this performance.  The Giants started the game poorly but got better and better as the night went on with top performances from Jason Ruff, Shawn Skiehar and the four D-men.  In goal Philippe DuRouville kept the Giants in the game at times, espeically when it came to the shootout where he was outstanding making three saves on the Panthers shooters.

Leigh Jamieson had a night to forget, starting the game on the second line with Mark Dutiaume and George Awada, George was clearly carrying the pair and Leigh was soon moved to the third line with Mo and Levers.  Following that he was soon riding the pine for a few shifts as he continued to mis-place passes and play no physical game to speak of what-so-ever from a big man.

Still there was enough gritty performances from enough guys to keep in the game and give themsleves the chance to win.  It had fans on the edge of their seats when it came to a shootout to actually win that game.
